Schwartz's recent book _Spectacular Realities : Early Mass Culture
in fin-de-siecle Paris_ (Berkeley : University of California Press,
1998) might be useful too.  Shohat and Stam's chapter on the
"Imperial Imaginary" from _Unthinking Eurocentrism_ (Routledge, 1994)
seems right on target for your purposes as well since they discuss the
Lumiere brothers and Melies.  Good luck, Jim
