I disagree with Karena... I mostly find Truffaut too sweet. Except for The
400 Blows which is a beauty.

French films? Phew! Big topic... Other New Wave directors are great. I
specially like Eric Rohmer, but it's not for everybody's tastes. Most of his
films are very similar (with the exception of two historic films, Lancelot
du Lac and Madame O) and they are low key comedies about romantic
misunderstandings between French people. And they are VERY French.

Jacques Rivette is an absolute genius. Céline et Julie von en bateau is my
favorite all time film. It's as strange as a dream. Not because of its
images but because of its convoluted plotline. It's the closest I've come to
reaching an altered state of mind through film.

Jean Luc Godard is another genius. He's Swiss, not French, but he was also
part of that Nouvelle Vague so I'll include him here anyway... Breathless is
a classic. His most popular and accesible one probably is Le Mépris, with
Brigitte Bardot. Weekend is the best apocalyptic film I've ever seen.

As for more recent fare... Arnaud Desplechin's La Sentinelle is good. La
Haine, is quite stylish and dark.

Right now I can not recall anything else... I'm sure the names will come to
me as soon as I click the 'send' button.

Happy hunt,
Manuel
