Just saw Jacques Tati's "Jeu de Fete" (1949) again
tonight. Very funny, very clever, very subtle. You
need to pay close attention, but there are little
jokes everywhere, if you blink an eye you miss another
one. 
I don't think Tati is discussed very often, but he
will forever stand out as one of France's most
important film makers, even though he made only a
couple. Like Kubrick, he spent a lot of (too much?)
time on his products and was a real control freak
(otherwise known as an "auteur"). Also check out "Les
vacances de Monsieur Hulot".
