According to Entertainment Weekly (and my sometimes faulty memory), Jodie
Foster was unhappy with the Thomas Harris book, and felt that the path
that Starling takes in the novel is outside of what the character would
do.

I find it a little strange that an actor would tell the author what a
character would do, but that's Hollywood.
