To me, this is such a broad topic!
I'm not a film "scholar" but these are some of my ideas...
I would imagine we are always interested in the lives of others and how we 
compare to ours.
We have a basic need to want to see inside the lives of others and
films allow us to pretend".
We are interested in lives that quite different from our own.
It is a chance to live through others things we might never experience.
It is a chance to see/experience things that are forbidden to us in real 
life?
