I am assuming -- particularly from looking at the examples -- that you are
talking about movies from *this past year*, i.e. 2000. Am I incorrct in
thinking that? (Because if we're talking all-time, it would be tough to
narrow it down to just three...:)

For 2000, then, and knowing that I have missed a bunch:

U.S./English language films:
  1. The Virgin Suicides
  2. Requiem for a Dream
  3. Almost Famous

followed by: Quills, Erin Brockovich (despite its mainstream
sensibilties), Chicken Run and Croupier.

Foreign language films:
  1. Yi Yi
  2. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
  3. The Girl on the Bridge
