i thought traffic was little more than a tv drama blown up for the big screen, superficially appropriated by color-coding and big-name actors. much of it comes across as pretty phony, most notably zeta-jones's transformation from incredibly naive wife to surrogate shot-caller, ordering hits on her husband's rival cartel heads. and yes, del toro gives a nuanced performance, but few have commented on the fact that his spanish is very puerto rican, which certainly wouldn't help his cause as an undercover agent in tijuana. it's also full of cliches, from the father-daughter relationship to the anarchic depiction of mexico. i think soderbergh is one of the better hollywood directors, but he's shuffling his feet on this one and he got away with it. forget what you've heard, don't expect much, and you'll be entertained. but don't expect any major insights.
