In fact, in his chapters on Lyotard and Derrida he directly addresses the question of whether art can be 'truly' radical etc. Carroll ties together the problem of art being `art' in terms of its limits, its designation or definition and the apparent paradox implicit in Lyotard's notion of the postmodern as anterior to the modern- or in the case of Derrida the (im)possibility of art transgressing its `frame'. regards, Stephen
