Well, according to my vade mecum: Merriam Webster, the term probably
originates from "Onan, son of Judah (Genisis 38:9)" and means
1. Masturbation
2. Coitus Interruptus
3. Self-Gratification.   
 
I think it had something to do with some poor laddy spilling his "seed".

If the term has any greater meaning in a Foucault-ian sense, I wouldn't
know.  But if the prior post implies that ritalin is the new happy-fun
drug of choice, perhaps this definition will help.
