<from Kristin Switala>

Here are the texts that I have on my French Feminism syllabus:

Irigaray, L., JE, TU, NOUS, TOWARD A CULTURE OF DIFFERENCE
Irigaray, L., THINKING THE DIFFERENCE

(These two Irigaray books are great because they talk about current
political issues in France, and they aren't as difficult as Irigaray's
earlier texts.)

Cixous, H., COMING TO WRITING AND OTHER ESSAYS
Cixous, H., THE BOOK OF PROMETHEA

(I use these two texts by Cixous in this order, to introduce students to
the literary aspect of French Feminism. The first book is an expose on
feminist writing, and the second book is one of Cixous' novels. It's
wonderful!)

de Bouvoir, S. THE SECOND SEX
Irigaray, L. THIS SEX WHICH IS NOT ONE

(These two books are more difficult than the previous four, but they are
classics in French Feminism and directly address the issue of sexuality
and gender. I use them at the end of the semester because of their
difficulty, and I find it helps to get the students used to reading this
material prior to launching them into these two books in particular.)

I hope that this list helps you find some good books to include in your
French Feminism class. If you have any questions about them, please
email me directly.

Sincerely,
