Subject: Reading possibilities

Hi..

I've been following the requests of what everyone would like to read, and I
have a proposal.. I still think that Chanter's book, *Ethics of Eros* is a
good grounding point for us to begin a discussion.. for a few reasons..
Irigaray is difficult to read from scratch (unless you've read the other
primary works) and Chanter does a lot of work for us by abstracting the other
philosophers.. I learned the most about LI when I read Whitford's *Philosopy
in the Feminine* alongside the actual Irigaray texts she was discussing.. so
here is the schedule I propose:

1. Chapter 1 (Chanter)
LI Reading: (General) Barach and Serrano *Women Analyze Women*
NY: NYU Press, 1988. pages 231-45 are LI.

Jardine and Menke *Shifting Scenes: Interviews on Women, Writing and
Politics in Post-68 France* NY: Columbia UP (I don't have the LI pages, it's
packed away.. will get them)

*The Irigaray Reader* Whitford's intros to the sections

(secondaries)
*Braidotti, Rosi. *Patterns of Dissonance* (Chapter on LI,
Cixous, Kristeva)

Whitford, Margaret. *LI: Philosophy in the Feminine*

Grosz, Liz. *Sexual Subversions: Three French Feminists* Sydney:
Allen Unwin.

(on essentialism) Schor, Naomi. "This Essentialism Which Is Not One:
Coming to Grips with Irigaray." *Differences* 1(2) Summer 38-58.

Fuss, Diana. *Essentially Speaking: Feminism, Nature, and
Difference* and "Reading Like a Feminist" (In the same Differences issue)

Obviously no one can read all of this if you haven't already read it, but
if you want to delve into some of the primary LI texts or texts that
discuss her, any of these will be in line with the Chanter discussion in
chapter one.

I suggest we allow ourselves to take three weeks per chapter at first and
see how that goes..

2. Chapter 2 (On the Legacy of Simone deBeavoir)
The only LI reading that particularly parallels this chapter is
her piece in the same issue of differences cited above.. and it is an
essay addressed to Simone deBeavoir. Also, if you haven't looked at
*Second Sex* in awhile, it would be a good primary text to look back over.

3. Chapter 3 (On Antigone and Hegel)
If you haven't read it, you'll need to at least peruse Sophocles'
*Antigone*

The LI primary texts discussed alongside this chapter should be:
	Ethics of Sexual Difference
	Speculum of the Other Woman
	Sexes and Geneologies
(I will suggest specific chapters, sections when we get there)

The Hegel primary text alongside this chapter should be:
	Phenomenology of Spirit.

4. Chapter 4 (on Heidegger)

The LI primary texts alongside this chapter should be:
	Marine Lover
"Sorcerer Love: A Reading of Plato's Symposium, Diotoma's Speech"
*Hypatia* 3(3) 1989.
	Ethics of Sexual Difference
	(selections from) Irigaray Reader
(again, I'll specify these when we get there)

The Heidegger texts would be:
	Being and Time
	"The Principle of Identity"
"The Origin of the Work of Art"

Okay, so you get the idea.. I think we would most profit by reading both
alongside each other.. that way, if you've already read all the LI texts,
you will be reading something new.. if you haven't already read the LI
texts, you read those and your reactions will still parallel the topic
we're discussing..

If you all want to do this, I'll make up a much more structured reading
list and schedule and post it soon.
