What about I's comments concerning, "that extremely ancient civilization [that] would undoubtedly have a different alphabet, a different language..."? (25) Cixous, Chawaf and other "new" French feminists often describe ecriture feminine as a process which would allow for regression back to this archaic space, by creating a different lang, etc. To what extent does the mention of this archaic space open up the possibility of different (psycho)social dynamics or (il)logic? It strikes me as very utopian...but also promising... It seems like Freud used this space as one more example of woman as mystery, unknowable, unrepresentable. How does the Fre fem attempt to "recall" it reproduce/create it? and to what degree? I think Butler could be useful here, but I can't make the connection right now... Thoughts, anyone? beth bdroppl-AT-grove.ufl.edu PS: shaunanne--could you give me the reference for the Butler quote on Irigaray posted yesterday if you have it handy? Thanks! ------------------
