I don't think anything we'll be reading by mid-semester will be a big surprise. The beginning however made me pay attention. the professor has a particular framework of Marx-LeviStrauss-Saussure as the basis for the french feminist school. At a basic and/or intuitive level, i thought this was logical. As for the details of their interrelations to Fr. Fem'ism, well, I'll have to wait and see. The pre-French-fem'ism readings are: Saussure, Course in General Linguistics. Levi-Strauss, Elementary Structures of Kinship. Marx, Greman Ideology; Das Kapital, v.1. later on: Irigaray, Ce Sexe qui n'en est pas un. Kristeva, Pouvoirs de l'horreur. Cixous, La jeune ne'e. Derrida, Epirons: Les Styles de Nietzche Lacan, Feminine Sexuality. The thing I like about this course is that, while the content forces one to think critically, by the end, I will have read so much Fr. fem'ism!
