Have you read Bataille's _L'Erotisme_ (_Eroticism_)?  He talks, among 
other things, about the manner in which Christianity effected the split 
between the profane and the sacred, thereby suppressing the ambiguity of 
the sacred as it is conceived in 'primitive' religions.
