One of the most compelling, and perhaps earliest examples of gender-bending
in art that I can think of was Marcel Duchamp's alter ego Rrose Selavy.
There's been alot written on this--you may want to check out Amelia Jones'
 recent book on Duchamp, which conducts a feminist reading of this . . .
