An interdisciplinary symposium sponsored by
Cultural Studies & The Institute for Women's Studies
Macquarie University
Sydney Australia
18 October 1996

How are feelings produced?
Are some feelings given more status than others?
Will there be `virtual' feelings?
Are feelings gendered?

Once praised as the key to our authentic
individuality, feelings are now seen by many as
another commodity in the cultural market-place.

The aim of this conference is to investigate how our
feelings are situated in society, culture and politics_
can they be theorized in relation to current
controversies about textuality, discourse and the
body? What is their place in aesthetics and ethics?
What are we allowed to feel, and when are we
allowed to feel it?
