Beth, I am not certain that this information will be helpful but perhaps to
contextualize Miller's work you could look at Leonor Fini's (1918-1996)
paintings wherein the sphinx serves as leitmotif (also, the sphinx in her
paintings resembles the artist herself thus indicating a collusion between
the mythological and the personal--similar to Miller??). Another interesting
references about the sphinx--Otto Rank called the sphinx "the woman with a
penis(!)" Also if you are interested in theorizations regarding the
hybridized body--you might want to look at the writings of Janine
Chasseguet-Smirgel who writes about the hybrid or composite being as a
perversion (see Susan Suleiman, "Subversive Intent: Gender, Politics, and
the Avant-Garde"). Finally, you may want to look at Cixous' The Laugh of the
Medusa for some insights. Good luck. Amy Bero
