Do you have any more precise reference for the Otto Rank remark about the
sphinx being a "woman with a penis"?!?  That's definitely one I should track
down . . .

Yes, I do know about Leonor Fini's sphinx paintings, although it's interesting
that she was once reproached by Jean Genet for holding the bridle too tight
on the "fabulous and misshapen animal" in her work, and for clinging to
appearances "lest you be invaded by the rump of the sphinx and driven by
wings and claws."

I'll have to go back a look at the Suleiman book again for the reference to
Chasseguet-Smirgel, although the track I'm taking on the hybrid idea is
more related to Bataille's heterogeneity.

Thanks again -- any if anybody else has any ideas, I'd be overjoyed to hear
them!!
