As far as the connotation of spam as repetition, one Internet lexicon
(sorry, can't recall which) derives it directly from the Monty Python
sketch in which spam was added to every item on the menu.  They mention the
viking chorus and everything.  I wouldn't be surprised to find that this
was the true etymology, knowing the number of geeks that I do and how
well-versed they are in Python.
