Subject: Re: Smugness and Sibling Rivalry

The issue of smugness and sibling rivalry have lingered with me long
after reading the recent postings. They have strayed through my mind as
I drive along in my car. The issue is perhaps central to why I have
begun to read FF.

It is about learning to understand difference in a very profound way.
Not to play lip service to a new idea but to actively engage in thinking
through a new model. Passion is not the issue. Recognizing before we
even engage with another speaker that their ideas will not be the same
as mine does not require that we can not have a position. We do not need
to kill the 'mother' or the 'father' in order to exist.

What I think has been a joyful exchange has been represented in the
writing by Timothy. To end his comments with a question, "Does that make
sense?", is a profound change of address to an audience. Irigaray speaks
about the feminine mode of address which is the you. While the
masculine, or perhaps the modern mode, is the I (frequently masked as
he). It presents us with differnce way of expressing passion not a
suppression of passion.
