I don't know if these references are developed enough to help you, Sally, 
but Irigaray mentions mucosity/mucous membranes in "Love of Same, Love of 
the Other," in _Ethics of Sexual Difference_, and also in passage "X" in 
_Elemental Passions_. You might also want to look at "The Maternal 
Order," in _je, tu, nous_: it's an interview with Helene Rouch that looks 
at what Irigaray calls the "placental economy," and she uses this notion 
in much the same way as the notion of mucosity.
