Since there are several ways to do this, I've broken up the instructions into two messages. Hope this helps. Judith Poxon co-moderator, french-feminism poxon-AT-saclink.csus.edu ********************************** Hi, everyone! I've recently received a couple of private requests for info on accessing the archives, so I thought I'd post some pointers to the whole list, since others of you may be wondering, too. (You might want to save this for future reference, if you're like me and need to be walked through a new procedure several times before you really get the hang of it!) There are several ways to get materials from the archives. I think the easiest way to retrieve files is via gopher, if you have access to it. What you need to do is get to your main system prompt, whatever you're using, and type gopher jefferson.village.virginia.edu and then you'll follow a series of menus to get to our archives. At the main menu, select item #4 (publications of the Institute). You'll get a second menu, from which you select item #3 (discussion lists), which takes you to a third menu, from which you select item #21 (spoons). The french-feminism archive is at item #26 on the spoons menu; the menu for our archives lists, I think, 5 entries, of which the first is called Lubbock.abstracts (which is the item you want to select if you're looking for one of the 7 or 8 abstracts that presenters from the recent conference made available). Other entries are labelled, for example, "recent" or "french-feminism_1995". From here you can look around to your heart's content! And if and when you find files that you want to retrieve, just read through to the end of the file, where you'll find a menu bar running across the bottom of the message that gives you several options, one of which is <m>mail. Select this by typing m <enter> and you'll be asked to enter your email address. Once you do, gopher will mail the file you've selected to you as if it were a regular email message. A second way to retrieve stuff from the archives is by using the "get" command in an email message to majordomo-AT-jefferson.village.virginia.edu This is really easy once you know what file you want, but it doesn't allow you to browse the files first. You can, however, first get an index of available files by sending a message to majordomo that says index french-feminism Then you can read through the index and see if any of the files sounds like what you're looking for. Once you've decided which file(s) you want, send a message to majordomo that says get french-feminism <filename> where <filename> is the name of the file you've selected. You can "get" several files in the same email message, but put each request on a separate line. OK, you can also access the archives via FTP, but I'm going to put the instructions for that in a separate post, since this one is running a bit long. Hope this all helps!
