Saint Mary of Egypt (~500 AD) was a prostitute saint whose identity
eventually conflated with Mary Magdalene. She also took on the identities
of several Mary's in the NT and became closely connected with the Virgin
Mary. I don't know of a specific quote, but the origin in the
Christian/Western context could be attributed to Magdalene.

The cult of Magdalene flourished in Medieval France, and part of her
legendary includes a pilgrimage to Marseille and the conversion of the King
and Queen. She accomplished the conversion by facilitating the Queen to
become pregnant (fertility goddess/Venus/Diana).

I hope this is helpful. If additional biblio on this topic would be
helpful, send me a note.
