Piri Thomas
Poet, and author of: Down These Mean Streets; Savior, Savior Hold My Hand;
Seven Long Times; and Stories from El Barrio. Piri Thomas' struggle for
survival, identity and recognition began September 10, 1928, in New York
City's Spanish Harlem, a street labyrinth of lawlessness. The vicious
environment took its toll and he served seven (7) long years of nightmarish
incarceration at hard labor. Despite his violent background of drugs, gang
warfare and crime, he knew that he had not been born a criminal from his
mother's womb. Within him burned a deep conviction that he would use all his
street and prison know-how to reach hard core youth and turn them away from
a life of crime. In 1967, with funds from the Rabinowitz Foundation, both
his career and fame as an author launched with the electrifying
autobiography, Down These Mean Streets. Today, Piri Thomas travels around
the country giving lectures and conducting workshops in colleges and
universities.

Ever since the 1967 publication of his electrifying autobiography, Down
These Means Streets, Piri Thomas has talked to people, young and old, about
his struggle for survival and identity as a Puerto Rican/Cuban born and
raised in the barrios of New York. He also discusses the effects of racism
as a Puerto Rican and as a person of color on his as well as our lives.
Directed not only to the mind, but also to the heart, his fundamental
message, the need for unity among all the colors and ethnicities, flows
skillfully through his conversation and readings. Using his work, and that
of others -- prose, poetry and music -- he creates an unforgettable
artistic, literary and personal experience in the listener.

extensive biography.
