How have literary texts expressed, propagandized, faked, or fostered identity? How are they used to exorcise certain undesirable traits? How is otherness confronted or assimilated and what is the role of the Other in forming identity? The organizers are interested in these and all other issues of identity and otherness in all periods, pertaining but not limited to: nation and ethnicity, popular culture, gender, class, race, religion, and the self. Comparative literature and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged especially those exploring links between literatures and art, film, history, religion, music, psychology, anthropology, and others. Papers may be in English, French, Italian and Spanish and will be limited to a reading time of 20 minutes. Please submit three copies of an anonymous abstract with an attached cover letter providing the author's name, department, addresses (mailing and electronic), and phone number(s). Indicate also if any audiovisual aid will be needed for the presentation. All submissions must be postmarked by January 15, 1999. A selection of papers will be published in the department=B9s journal Romance Review.
