Identity and Otherness in the Romance Literatures

**************************************************

Seventh Annual Graduate Conference on Romance Studies

Call For Papers

March 12 - 13, 1999
Boston College Chestnut Hill, MA
http://www2.bc.edu/~ivanovae/conference.html

This conference seeks to explore identity and otherness in Italian,
Hispanic, and French and Francophone literature. How have literary
texts expressed, propagandized, faked, or fostered identity? How are
they used to exorcise certain undesirable traits? How is otherness
confronted or assimilated and what is the role of the Other in forming
identity? The organizers are interested in these and all other issues
of identity and otherness in all periods, pertaining but not limited
to: nation and ethnicity, popular culture, gender, class, race,
religion, and the self. Comparative literature and interdisciplinary
approaches are encouraged especially those exploring links between
literatures and art, film, history, religion, music, psychology,
anthropology, and others.

Papers may be in English, French, Italian and Spanish and will be
limited to a reading time of 20 minutes.

Please submit three copies of an anonymous abstract with an attached
cover letter providing the author's name, department, addresses
(mailing and electronic), and phone number(s). Indicate also if any
audiovisual aid will be needed for the presentation. All submissions
must be postmarked by January 15, 1999.

A selection of papers will be published in the department=B9s journal
