First, let me say yes, I would be happy to continue being responsible for the list, especially if this crisis helps to rejuvenate it.

That said, I think that what would be involved in taking over the list depends on where it's housed, what software is used, how active the list is, and whether the moderator reserves the right to approve messages before they appear on the list (which I've never done for french-feminism).

spoon lists run on majordomo, which automates a lot of the work; the members of the collective have taken turns (serving for a week every 2 months) doing the miscellaneous admistrative work of _all_ the lists, and that chore usually takes only about 20-30 minutes a day, most of which is spent deleting spam.

Many email lists (including SWIP-L, which I also moderate) use listserv software, and again much of the work is done automatically by the software. At present I'm entirely responsible for the day-to-day operation of SWIP-L, and my time commitment to the list varies from a few minutes a day or less, when the list is relatively inactive, to perhaps half an hour a day when, as now, there's a busy thread running on the list.

There are also other list-maintenance programs available today, about which I know nothing because I haven't used them. I think the most popular is Mailman [sic], and it may be that it's some version of that that Yahoogroups uses.

Another comment on Yahoo: It's primarily the commercialization of the lists on Yahoo that I find objectionable, but since several of you have suggested it -- and since no one so far has offered to host the list at their institution -- I'll look into what would be involved in moving us to Yahoo. My day is too busy today, but I have time tomorrow, and will report back as soon as I know more.

Meanwhile, thanks so much to all of you who have expressed your support for the continuation of the list.

Judith
