Subject: HAB: Critical Theory of Habermas vs Social Action

In reading the works of Habermas, Giddens, Horkheimer and Parsons, I have
come to realise that Critical Theory might be seen as a Social Action
theory. Social Action theories are part of the domain of social theories
and are geared to change of a situation. Now for my question:
Is critical theory really part of the social action theory domain and if
not what differentiates it from social action?

In my application to a case study I can see that there can be distinct
differences in application but this does not appear to be backed up by
theory. Considering the issues of discourse and communicative action, and
legitimation what of these are the grounding for social action theories?

Can anyone shed light on this and also any refereences would be appreciated.

Rod
