Michael's point seems well taken given the influence of Schmitt on some post
modernists like Laclau and Mouffe and to a certain extent Derrida. Some
of this has to do with the way L and M use Schnitt's critique o liberalism
to as a criticism of parliamentary discussion which Schmitt rather
misinterprets as forms of compromise independent of what habermas used to
call will-formation. He can only see a common will, I believe in an
instituted social form prior to consensuality. a point which L and M copy I
think.
John Keane did a small piece on Schmitt in one of his books criticizing
Laclau and Mouffe and there was an extensive though as far as I'm concerned
misguided discussion on Telos, where some have tried to fuse adorno and
Schmitt. (of course there is Schnitt connection with Benjamin and with some
of the legal and political frankfurters. There was an old piece again form
Telos on the conservative connection to critical theory which I could look
up if someone wants to read it.. Is this also something some of you want to
follow thorough on.
