Dear Gary and list,

Thanks for the update on these very contemporary Habermas details. For a
philosopher who prides - and is prided by many - including myself, for his
overt political engagement, much is expected of him to give out.

It must be a very difficult position to be in - an intellectual legend in
one's own lifetime and cognisant of the artificiality (or perhaps
superficilisation of one's work) this sort of status tends to entail.

One of the things which continues to interest me in Habermas's work is the
sense of _work in progress_ which is apparent. It is fallible and sometimes
untenable, and this lack of gospelness makes Habermas's own work an ongoing
point of departure rather than a destination for critical inquiry.

Which brings me to my next begging request! In the PDM, Habermas does not
retort to Lyotard's post-modern condition critique. Is there a retort? And
if so where, please?

Happy 2000 to all as it draws to a close. Although mindful of Lyotard
perhaps it is best not to get TOO hung up on annual narratives :-)
