You seem to characterize medieval as non-modern.  Just because the historical 
period of Islamic development is medieval has nothing to do with being 
anti-modern. Modernity is merely in contrast to the ancients, namely, Romans 
and before.  But, even the Romans identified and contrasted themselves from 
barbarians. I am studying the West's attitudes towards Saladin, the Arab 
leader who effectively stopped the Crusaders.  I do not recall their being 
any repsect.
