Subject: HAB: Discourse <--> discussion <--> chat

With Vic Peterson, I'm for diversity of communicative
action, and I suppose every subscriber to the HAB list is,
too. But it could be useful to pursue a forum where the
distinction between discourse (focused inquiry), discussion
(what usually happens at the HAB list and is welcomed by
all subscribers), and chat (what many subscribers may not
welcome) can be both respected and pursued.

A very good way to promote discourse is to provide a way to
easily archive long presentations or papers (esp. drafts
that subscribers want response on) without forcing the
listserv to distribute these to everyone (and possibly
imposing on subscribers' mailboxes). Yahoo! Groups provides
for this, with a "file" archive feature (that could be used
for reference digests on common or cumulative topics).

A very good way to handle hot topics, without imposing on
subscribers, is to have a chat room option for the group.
Yahoo! Groups provides for this, as a members-only feature.

And a very good way to manage your subscription is to have
the option of turning on and off receipt of postings (when,
say, you're on vacation or very busy) without having to
unsubscribe. Yahoo! Groups provides this.

So, then, so what that there's modest advertising at the
Website? Great software options for free.

Anyway, it's an option: <habermas-AT-yahoogroups.com>

Regards,

Gary
