Habermas said Rumsfeld's defence doctrine was "in contempt of the fundamentals of international law" and was an assault on America's own compromised ideals which had lagged behind U.N. human rights policy.
Those ideals "seem to find more support today in Europe than in an old-looking New World," he added.

Sloterdijk said the United States was stuck in the conventions of "heroism" whereas "Old Europe" had moved on to a "post-heroic style". Rumsfeld thought the United States was the "grown-ups" whereas Germany and France thought "infantilism" had taken over in Washington.
