Michael,
The difference might indeed be the explicitness
of the question concerning being. And yes, a 
religion as such is an ontic description of the 
supposed relation between Being and beings. But 
before such a description could be made there 
must have been a moment when no description was 
yet available and "from the pine tree one 
learned of the pine tree". 
Besides, might it not be more correct to say 
that the Western world as we know it originates 
from the forgetting of the question concerning
being.
