From: "Stuart Elden" <Stuart.Elden-AT-clara.co.uk> Subject: The Origin of the Work of Art Date: Thu, 1 Oct 1998 15:12:58 +0100 Once more an issue of translation:- In Die Ursprung des Kunstwerkes, Heidegger says:- "Form meint hier die raeumlich oertliche Verteilung und Anordnung der Stoffteile, die einen besonderen Umriss, naemlich den eines Blockes, zur Folge hat" (Holzwege, p17) Hofstadter renders this in The Origin of the Work of Art as:- "Form means here the distribution and arrangement of the material parts in spatial locations, resulting in a particular shape, namely, that of a block" (Basic Writings, p154). Most of this is, I think, fine. What interests/troubles me, is the double adjective of 'raeumlich oertliche'. Unless I am mistaken, Hofstadter obscures this by translating it as 'spatial locations'. Would it be pushing it too much to render the German as:- "Form means here the spatial platial [i.e. an adjectival form of place] distribution and arrangement of material parts, resulting in a particular shape, namely that of a block". Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Best wishes Stuart --- from list heidegger-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
