Greg, I'm always talking about this distinction which goes under various names (ontological difference, twofold (Zwiefalt), bearing-out, carrying apart (Austrag; The Onto-Theological Constitution of Metaphysics in “Identitaet und Differenz” (where a "Verwindung des Ge-Stells aus dem Er-eignis" is spoken of S.29)), dif-ference (Unter-Schied; The Onto-Theological Constitution of Metaphysics). Apart from _Moira_ where the OD is named as "Zwiefalt von Anwesen und Anwesendem", there is also IuD, where it is called "der Unter-Schied von Ueberkommnis und Ankunft" (IuD S.63). This is not simply a matter of playing around with etymologies, for H. is at pains to show what these words mean in this context. Consider e.g. the following passage: "Sein des Seienden heisst: Sein, welches das Seiende ist. Das 'ist' spricht hier transitiv, uebergehend. Sein west hier in der Weise eines Ueberganges zum Seienden. Sein geht jedoch nicht, seinen Ort verlassend, zum Seienden hinueber, so als koennte Seiendes, zuvor ohne das Sein, von diesem erst angegangen werden. Sein geht ueber (das) hin, kommt entbergend ueber (das), was durch solche Ueberkommnis erst als von sich her Unverborgenes ankommt. Ankunft heisst: sich bergen in Unverborgenheit: also geborgen anwaehren: Seiendes sein." (IuD S.62, 2nd. ed. 1957) How is this to be translated? An attempt: "Beyng of beings means: beyng which is beings. The 'is' speaks here transitively, in passing over. Beyng holds sway here in the mode of passing over to beings. Beyng does not, however, in leaving its location, pass over to beings, as if beings, previously without beyng are now affected by it. Beyng passes over (that), comes dis-closingly over (that) which only arrives as something that dis-closes itself by virtue of such passing-over. Arrival means: self-enclosing in disclosedness: while on en-closed in such a way: be a being." The word "anwaehren" presents some difficulties since it is not even in the 33 volume Grimm; but "waehren" is there in four different meanings, the fourth of which seems to be relevant here: "waehren, v. IV, bestand haben, dauern, sich zeitlich oder raeumlich ausdehnen. ... das wort ist jedenfalls etymologisch zu wesan 'sein' zu stellen, ... waehren ist seiner bedeutung nach als ein gesteigertes 'sein' zu bezeichnen,... 1) die grundbedeutung ist die von 'bestand haben, in seinem zustand verharren', der absolute gebrauch des wortes bildet mithin den ausgangspunkt, aber schon im ahd. werden auch bestimmungen angeschlossen, die auf die ausdehnung des zustandes hinweisen." Instead of saying "anwesen", H. uses "anwaehren", which can be rendered as 'whiling on', similar to "andauern" (last on, endure), which has basically the same meaning. The aspects of 'bestand haben, in seinem zustand verharren' are worth noting here with their stem: 'stand', persist in a stand, have substance, take a stand. To be a being: arrive to while on in a stand that comes from the passing-over of beyng. The dif-ference (carry apart) carries out the difference of passing-over and arrival disclosingly-enclosingly. H. is trying to think beyng here as coming from the difference. I’m out of town for a couple of days.
