Dear Henk,

Thank you for your references and comments.  To tell you the truth, I'm
not sure what Heidegger's German term is.  I know there is a discussion
of "das Selbe" in an essay whose English title is "The Principle of
Identity" (published in a book entitled _Essays in Metaphysics_, which
is a translation of _Identität und Differenz_). In this translation "das
Selbe" is translated as "the Same." 

I don't know, however, if this is his principle discussion of the term,
nor is it very clear to me what its significance is (though, its
relation to Hegelian dialectics - as has been pointed out already in
responce to my post - is clear).

I'm interested in the term in part in order to understand how it
functions in some of Derrida's texts (for instance, in "Differance," as
well as in _Disseminations_), and how Derrida's usage differs from
Heidegger's.
