Dear Henry,

Heidegger's play on Danken and Denken, and the whole business on "thinking the thanking thought" has always been one of my thanks-giving favorites too. I believe it's the basic inspiration for Derrida's recent spate of talk about "The gift, " especially the gift of death. In rhetorical terms it has struck me that hermeneutical phenomenology is best expressed in what is known as epideictic speech, which is essentially a "hermeneutics of appreciation." When you really begin to think in those terms, i.e. that when all is said and done, thinking thanks is what hermeneutical phemnology comes to, you see that Heidegger's darkest moments in fact are closest to the light.

The actual text by the way, I believe is in "Conversation on a Country Path," in a little book translated as "Discourse on Thinking."

Thanks,
Allen
