From: "Prof. Dr. Rafael Capurro" <capurro-AT-hbi-stuttgart.de> Subject: Re: Heidegger in Germany Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 21:24:06 +0100 henk: >the necessity of racism ("Rassenpflege" as he calls it; cf. GA69). sorry but this is rubbish! at least as it suggests (to me) H. is defending the _Rassenpflege_. But in GA 69 (p. 70: _Rassen-pflege ist eine machtmaessige Massnahme_ and p. 223) H. is (1939-40) constantly criticizing the Wille zur Macht, Machenschaften etc. including all kinds of socialisms, nationalisms, racisms etc. Just take the book and read (tolle lege) (also about macht and gewalt, pp. 76 incl. brutality) p. 58: Zu entscheiden ist: ob _Helden_ das Seiende noch uebermachten_ und ihm erliegen oder ob die _Weisheit_ in das Seyn sich fuegt. (to decide: whether _heroes_ become masters of beings and therefore succumb or _wisdom_ bows to Being) Michael can provide better translation. My interpretation: bowing to Being is not obedience to a fatum but just the contrary, become aware of what is no predictable, it is, as H. immediately says, Questioning (das Fragen), it is not God oder the Highest, but, the _abyss_. This is a _metaphysic_ _de-cision_ to which H. is calling for. cheers rafael Heidegger is in no way a member of the German resistance against Htiler. And is personally responsible for all his thoughts and actions that seem to condone National Socialism. This does not mean that all of Heidegger's thinking is National Socialist. The foundations of Western thinking are those of Heidegger and also of National Socialism. Damnation of Heidegger is always also a damnation of these foundations. And in that sense Habermas's damnation of Heidegger comes from the inside. The thought that there is an inner truth and greatness in Heidegger's thought that is not immediatly there for everyone - outsiders - to see, is a typical Heideggerian (and Western?) one.
