Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 17:54:09 +0200 Subject: Nietzsche / Heidegger (1) The fundamental drift of Heidegger's interpretation of Nietsche, is the relationship of WtP and ER. It is what makes Nietzsche the metaphysical thinker, that thinks the completion of metaphysics. Do we merely take WtP, Revaluation of Values, and Uebermensch together, and leave out ER as mystical (Baeumler did this), then we have only the anti-metaphysician. But: even the anti-metaphysical element, can't be explained without ER. (or you end up with Vaihinger) To what question is WtP the answer? To: WHAT are beings (as beings)? To what question is ER the anwer? To: HOW is WtP (in its multiplicity) (as) itself? What-being, quiddity vs. that- or how-being (modalities: possibility, actuality, necessity) in their togetherness belong to the structure of metaphysical thinking - NB. these are not theorems. The structure is problematic, provokes a question. In the case of Nietzsche: how do WtP and ER belong together. In the 2nd piece (after WtP as art) of the Nietzsche volumes: ER, Heidegger retrieves the career of the thought of the ER. It comes first, earlier than that of WtP itself, in August 1881, at a specific place near Surlei. It came to him, says H., because Nietzsche had prepared himself for it, that is in the dark period from 1874 to 1881, when he leaves and is is left by everyone and everything. Nietzsche wrote on this: at first loneliness necessary. For some time one knows not in nor out. --------- In German: "Nicht ein- und nicht aus-Wissen." In GA 45 - it's no use reading the Contributions without reading this first - Heidegger, near the end, uses this same "not-knowing-in-or-out" as fundamental to the Grundstimmung. (Nietzsche 1: 1936, GA 45: 1937) An indication: as long as there is knowledge of something, the totality, the (problematic) 'im Ganzen" of that which is, can't come into view. Note, that Heidegger pays, during the treatment of ER, special attention to the 'Seinde im Ganzen' ---------- Nietzsche: For some time one knows not in nor out. Not-knowing: the world is CHAOS, not ruled by a unifying principle. Nietzsche has held out (standhalten) this Stimmung. And an all-concerning thought like the ER can only arrive in such a held-out situation. Heidegger: Still in the same month of August, Nietzsche draws several scheme's, in order to collect the consequences of the thought. And H. pays special attention to the incommensurability of what Nietzsche in fact publicized and what he held back and was later edited in the Grossoktavausgabe. (now most of it in "Der Wille zur Macht", which is according to one of the many scheme's, Nietzsche left). And even in "Also sprach Zarathustra", the exposition of the ER is procrastinated (hinausgezoegert). One of thess notes from August contains the sequence: Die Einverleibung der Irrtuemer - The incorporation of the errors (that is: metaphysical errors) to be continued ------------------------------------------------------------------- note: see for the modalities: Kant's thesis on Being. They are Kantian categories. But not, like the others, determining the object, but determining the relationship of the object to the Vermoegen (power!!) of knowledge of man. Whether an object is possible, actual, necessary, can only be determined with regard to this relation. The relation itself is exposed by the subject, not by the objects ----------------------------------- drs.
