HEIDEGGER SEMINAR ACADEMIC YEAR 2001-2002

Heythrop College, University of London and the Margaret Beaufort Institute
in Cambridge will jointly host a seminar in Martin Heidegger's "Beitraege
zur Philosophie: vom Ereignis" (Volume 65 of the Heidegger Gesamtausgabe,
Frankfurt, Klostermann, 1989), written in the years 1936-38. English
Translation "Contributions to Philosophy: from Enowning" (Indiana University
Press, Bloomington, 1999). After Sein und Zeit (Being and Time), this text,
together with the text Besinnung (Volume 66 of the Gesamtausgabe and written
immediately after the Beitraege), is the place where arguably Heidegger most
lays out his own fundamental philosophical position.

The seminar will be conducted by Dr. Laurence Hemming of Heythrop College
and Dr. Susan Parsons of the Margaret Beaufort Institute. It is open to
University faculty members and postgraduate research students in the UK.
The seminar will meet at 2.00pm for two hours on the following Tuesday
afternoons during term-time:

Tuesday 16th October (meeting at 1.00 pm)
Tuesday 30th October
Tuesday 13th November
Tuesday 27th November
Tuesday 11th December

Meetings this term will be in London; next term we will move to Cambridge.
The seminar will work principally from the German text, and an at least
basic reading knowledge of German will be essential. Given the complexity
of the text the seminar, if successful, is likely to run into a second year.

Because the Beitraege covers the whole range of Heidegger's researches,
members of the seminar will be expected to undertake some reading of
sections of other Heidegger texts, and an at least rudimentary knowledge of
Sein und Zeit will be essential. The atmosphere of the seminar will be
informal and collaborative, although we hope that those attending will make
a strong commitment to the group.

Please contact Dr. Hemming on lph-AT-dircon.co.uk if you wish to join the
seminar. If you are not based at Heythrop I will e-mail instructions on how
to find the College and what room we will be in.
