Hi Kenneth,

First, the new Edler:
"Heidegger, Hölderlin, and National Socialism"
by Frank Edler
http://www.janushead.org/4-2/edler.cfm

The so-called post-metaphysical, or post-metaphorical positions
(as Harries', Edler's opponent) have in common a grotesque
under-estimation of metaphysics and metaphor.
They think, Heidegger is offering a new view on man and world,
which they then can criticize (Harries: provincialism)
But Heidegger at first only offers 'logical investigations' in order to
bring a new logic, a philosophical logic, which can express
what the old concepts, the old thinking couldn't. By taking
into account, what they point to, or fail to reach: reality.
Dasein is nothing, Dasein is this doing, and seeing what happens.
Without this doing, during which metaphysics shows time and
again another face, there is only the name Dasein, while reality
stays the same.

Gulio, the passage in "The principle of reason", where he looks back
upon "The essence of ground" (and implicitly GA26) is revealing now.
As he says in the Heraclit seminar, he was close to something, but
'truth' (Wesen der Wahrheit) came in between. Das Freie/the free, or
das Offene, the open, has to do with the Lichtung.

Is Lichtung/clearing a metaphor?

I also took a random look in Nietzsche, my vol. 1: The ER and freedom.
(after the 1881/82 notes) Although it doesn't touch Heidegger's
preoccupation with ground/freedom directly , it is very revealing as to
the width of its impact. Compare also the overpowering of the sky,
the kosmos, in Aristoteles. The eternal circling of the stars and the ER.

re: Habermas. How to steer the world practically, is one thing.
But then say so, and don't pretend to do philosophy.
