From: "Michael Staples" <michael-AT-intersubjectivestudies.com> Subject: RE: oh yea Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 06:20:30 -0800 Anna, I don't think there is anyone involved with Heidegger's thought who hasn't struggled with this issue of his involvement with the Nazi party. It isn't something easily ignored. Many papers and books have been devoted to this subject. Many discussions -- on this List as well. And what makes matters worse was Heidegger's silence with regard to the matter. Each of us has to come to terms with Heidegger's involvement with that political movement as best we can...however that comming to terms ends up. Many people are going to come to the very same conclusion that you have. Others are going to find some way around it, or simply come to another conclusions about what was going on for Heidegger. I too wonder how such a brilliant mind could have been caught up in that mess to the extent that he was. In reading other biographies, however, I suppose I lean toward the reading that he wasn't as supportive as your current biography suggests. I could certainly be wrong about that. But it doesn't matter very much. The peculiar sort of mystery concerning Heidegger's involvement with the Nazi's does not detract from the importance of what he has to say about Dasein's openness Being.
