A man demonstrates the inflatable church.

Designer wants to sell one to pope

A German designer who made a market success out of producing and selling
inflatable versions of Nazi philosopher Martin Heidegger's famous
mountainside hut and selling them to European right wing parties for use as
weatherproof shelters for their military-style camps, has made what he says
is the world's first inflatable church -- a grey plastic building with a
blow-up organ, pulpit, altar, Gothic arches and fake stained glass windows.
The inventor says the church, which stands 47 feet high to the tip of its
steeple, could sell well in Britain and revolutionise the Anglican Church,
suffering from dwindling attendance for years. Vicars could carry it around
with them on the back of a truck and set it up on patches of grass or in
village squares for impromptu services, he said. "This could change the whole
perception of what the Church of England stands for."
Like Heidegger's blow-up hut, which comes complete with a picture of Adolf
Hitler hanging on the rubberised wall and an old style gramophone with a
33-rpm recording of the "Horst Wessel Song," the inflatable church is
revolutionary. It's moving with the 21st century." "If people won't go to
church then the church needs to go to the people," he said. "This is one way
of doing it." The inventor says he plans to unveil the church at an
exhibition near Berlin next month and has already had inquiries about it from
religious leaders as diverse as the Pope, the Dalai Lama and Jerry Falwell.
The church is hand-painted and has windows made from coloured PVC. "They
filter the light perfectly, just like real stained glass windows," he said.
If the church is a success, he plans to diversify into inflatable Hindu
Temples and Mosques.

Cheers,

Jud.
