Lots of ripe stuff to discuss here in the heideggerian vein: "What are warriors for?" "the question concerning terrorism," and so forth. I would look upon the 'war on terrorism' as a succinct control mechanism that calls into play all of the calculative/calculating agencies of technology. Beyond the pernicious politics of right-wing amerika, the "war on terrorism" could be an announcement of the Gestell: terror being a kind of entity which obstructs or elides (thanks Malcolm) the reduction of humanity and beings to resources or inventory. There are, of course, other forms of life that have yet to be defined as 'terror' (except metaphorically, like environmentalists' views and feminists' views--so far) but the mobilizations taking place domestically and internationally through the US admin, reveal an opening for many things to be defined as terror, and conjoined to the gestell through political responses and oppressions, and the penal system. The liberal and neo-liberal political forces operate within gestell, too, of course. It appears that the operations of the gestell move less quickly through liberal democracy than through the neo-police state practices of the right wing. The former contributes to gestell more like digestion, the later more like rapid combustion. peace, hen --- from list heidegger-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
