This from my sixteen year old son, upon hearing that I had been doing some thinking about guilt and conscience: He:(loose transcription) It all comes about through evolution. In the case of guilt, human beings needed a way to develop trust; so guilt comes about as something to gnaw at you if you do something to make yourself untrustworthy. Me: Oh, you mean to keep men from straying from their families and not coming back to take care of them? He. No, the reason they are responsible to their families is for their own protection. Me. Men don't need their families for protection. It's the other way around. He: It's for when they get old(Oh Balding One!) and need their families to take care of them. Aside from the questionable science here, I am curious about the relationship between the phenomenological search for origins and what seems like a parallel search in evolutionary biology.
