Nietzsche's proud claim to decadence, while at the same time "being"
its counterpart is a perfect model for the positioning of the
philosopher for what Husserl characterizes as the "higher dignity" of
critical reflection. Heidegger said similarly of Plato that he took
on the "sophist in himself" as the only possible basis for critical
reflection on the relationship between philosophy and rhetoric. He
was both sophist and philosopher. The dialogue form, as Michael
suggests, gives an authentic rendering of each possibility in terms
of its other with the outcome remaining in doubt. All the true
thinker has to go on are these contrary claims about himself, which
he throws into the air, risking not only embarrassment if he misses
one or the other (or both), but also the danger of being beaned on
the head, by what he still insists is "merely" a claim. Of course,
claims can hurt, even injure, as surely as a "thing" which has the
solidity of actually being a thing.

Regards,

Allen (who was once circling in the outfield under a fly ball as
everyone watched--circling, circling . . .)
