Date: Sun, 11 Jun 1995 12:49:53 -0400 (EDT) From: engcubbi-AT-ACS.EKU.EDU Subject: Bakhtin-dialogism After receiving several email messages voting for Bakhtin, dialogism and Bakhtin-dialogism as the name for the list I am proposing, I have decided to propose the list under the name Bakhtin-dialogism as the most inclusive title. Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) was a Russian literary theorist whose theory of dialogue has been highly influential in a variety of fields, having implications for politics, linguistics, communication as well as many other disciplines. Dialogism is focused on the idea that culture, or even existence itself, is inherently responsive, involving individuals acting at a particular point in time and space, in reaction to what has gone and before and in expectation of what is to follow. Discussions appropriate for this list include: the life of Mikhail Bakhtin the Bakhtin group Bakhtin in relation to Soviet politics questions of attribution regarding publications by the Bakhtin group specific works written by or attributed to Bakhtin and the group significant themes discussed by Bakhtin such as: carnival grotesque realism official unofficial discourse dialogism monologism utterances speech genres transgredience heteroglossia the novel polyphony chronotope exotopy architectonics [these themes being discussed both in themselves and in application to various disciplines as linguistics, social theory, literary theory and so on] The discussion of current scholarship in the above areas is also encouraged. My goal as moderator of the list is to ensure that discussion is not limited to simply the discussion of one theorist but also includes in-depth discussion of the ideas contained in the theory.
