How about something like this:  

- In addition to whatever lists we have, there would be a list called,
  say, "topics-of-the-day".  This would be an automated thing which would
  send to its subscribers, each day, a list of the topics that were
  discussed on that day on any of our lists. 

- One would then be able to send a command to majordomo requesting
  all posts on a specific topic within a specified time period.
  These would arrive as normal e-mail.  One could read them and
  respond to them -- irrespective of what list they appeared on.
  It wouldn't matter if one wasn't subbed to the given list, because
  one could get all the responses to one's post by the same 
  send-me-all-posts-on-this-topic mechanism. 

This goes against the concept of each list as a somewhat-closed
community -- professional or otherwise -- since there would be the
possibility of all those intruding posts by outsiders: people on lists, 
but not on _the_ list.
