I mean, somehting which support the language as a communicating way is also important, for example, the understanding and acceptance of our finiteness so that we know and accept other ways of lives, though we don't really know much about them and maybe we don't have chance to experience such kinds of lives but we know, we work "parallel" with them and they are also valuable like our systems and our ways of life. Wong ---------- Von: Tony Michael Roberts[SMTP:solace54-AT-yahoo.com] Gesendet: Samstag, 20. Marz 1999 21:55 An: lyotard-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu Betreff: Not one common language but as many as we can master In order to keep the conversation going, we must come to know one anothers languages. The plural is important. We do not need to share a mother tongue(prefered genre of discourse)but each of us must come to speak the other's mother tongue. This is a different thing than finding a common language. Paralogy, if it is possible, is only possible because the distinction which Donald Davidson drew between incommensurablity and untranslatablity is valid. There will be words in your language which will not translate into mine and vice versa, This does not mean we can not communicate. It only means that I will have to learn spanish if I ever really want to know what the world "sympatico" means. I can learn spanish and someone who speaks spanish as a mother tongue can learn english. This is what makes the difference between untranslatablity and incommensurability. We are not, as Whorf thought, prisoners of the grammar of our language simply because we humans are clever enough to learn more than one. we can learn to speak both spanish and english, both science and religion. We can have more meaning and more resource for understanding available than will fit within the horizon of any one way of speaking. Paralogy can never be based on finding a common language. There is none. Paralogy is about learning someone else's langauge while at the same time heping them to learn your own. The result can be shared understandings and even institutional arangements which are felt as valid and respected even though the persons showing this respect could not express "the whole thing" they know and accept in any one genre of discourse. ---Lois Shawver <rathbone-AT-CALIFORNIA.COM> wrote: > > good point relating CLS to Rorty.
