They annexed corporations, all of them, in all countries, They did not send troops to occupy the conquered nations, but every corporation on Earth was controlled by a MEMBER of the BOARD assigned by the "WG". Half a century later, except for the elimination of rebellious protesters, social and economic evolution produced the same mix of corporate power, the same distribution of wealth, the same dispersion of ethnic peoples of different skin-color and culture, that we enjoy now, at the end of the 20th century. Only a few dissident groups were ever concerned about free speech, and they were ignored. They were ignored because they were of no consequence. The middle and upper classes in the industrialized nations valued the cheap products and services available from paid and unpaid workers in distant countries, and available from legal and illegal immigrant populations of their own countries. They adored the entertainments, celebrity, and vicarious enjoyments provided by the rich and famous, and their own (one in a hundred million) chances of joining them via state-sponsored lotteries. In such an IMAGINARY world, who would need free speech? Cheers, Hugh
